Nepal: Diplomacy may in risk
The Prime minister of Nepal, Khadga Prasad Oli just returns from the Davos of Switzerland. He participated 49th annual gathering of World Economic Forum in Davos. He is the first Nepali Prime minister, formally invited and joined the meeting. The ruling core-elite of Nepalese government and the ruling Nepal communist Party both are describing it as a bumper success of Nepalese diplomacy.
The benefit of Davos visit of PM Oli yet to be clear. We should wait some time for that actual result. Being after a strategic partner of China, Nepal is mostly engulfed by the interest of anti-Chinese lobby. America, India, and Japan are three pillars of Washington propounded Indo-Pacific Strategy especially to check China in the region. The South Asian regional organization SAARC thrown in the shadow and BIMSTEC promoted as a supportive organization of Indo-Pacific Strategy. Nepal is not only a member of SAARC but also a member of BIMSTEC. Ultimately anti-China interest wants to keep aloof Nepal from China.
They likely dealing Nepal softly in this first stage, because the major Chinese commitments still limited in the paper till now.The situation is not unknown of Kathmandu and not promoting the bilateral process hastily. Mostly articulated Nepal visit of Chinese President Xi also cool now. Ultimately Kathmandu does not want to stay aside from China. Another side, Kathmandu is not in the position to deny long term supporters Japan, India, and America.
In total, the diplomacy of Nepal is running in a very crucial time now. India always wants to deal Nepal bilaterally but in past few years, she raised some Nepal related issues on international forums. Delhi is following soft mood policy in immediate years.
PM Oli mostly interrogated on the issue of amendment of Transitional Justice act in Davos. The interest and behavior seen on Nepal in Davos indicate the situation. International humanitarian organizations and western countries have been pressuring on Nepal to ensure to punish serious human right violators and protect the right of victims. PM Oli strongly told the part of Nepal in the forum but he did not satisfy them. Weather Nepal does not like to correct policy in favor of them, especially on the issue of China, likely they change their treatment to Nepal. In the context, the human right issue may be a tool for them to tie the bolt to Nepal in future. The situation is in very risk for Nepal. Nepal has no option to manage a balanced foreign policy.
